Arthritis, Allergies and Being Gluten Free
As a child, I was diagnosed with juvenile arthritis. My arms and legs ached constantly. I’m wondering now if it was really arthritis or where the symptoms caused by an unknown gluten intolerance.
I know what kids like to eat like and I was typical in that I liked foods that contain gluten most of all- mac ‘n’ cheese, chocolate cake and fresh bread. Also, crackers and tomato soup. I was carbohydrate princess. Strangely, they say you crave what you are allergic to. I was happy to eat the foods I chose and craved not knowing what they were doing inside my intestines and to my body as a whole.
In my thirties, I was diagnosed with “hashimoto” thyroid disorder-an inactive thyroid. I had issues with fertility-miscarriage included. I’ve learned that if you have a gluten intolerance it can lead to other auto immune disorders including type 1 diabetes.
Since, I was diagnosed with arthritis, I was treated for that but nutritionally nothing was recommended and my health worsened year by year.
I feel it’s important to treat the cause and not just manage or cover up the symptoms because far too often it leads to more symptoms and worse health effects.
I added in top quality nutritional supplements I saw great improvements but it still seemed like I was struggling for health. BUT, I was still eating foods that contained gluten not knowing they were silently causes me more health issues. I developed nodules on my thyroid. I checked into the numerous causes of that and it turns out consuming gluten could be one of those contributors.
By following a gluten free diet I notice many changes. In particular, I have less headaches more energy in the morning.
My best advice to you is if you have health issues look at what you are eating. Intolerance and digestive problems can cause health problems. You can be your own best advocate or your own worse enemy. Symptoms of allergies may be instant other symptoms may take a few days sinus issues, headaches, body pain, etc. I noticed my body aches were worse at Christmas when I would be eating more white flour products in the form of shortbread cookies, genetti’s , etc
Stop eating certain foods for awhile then add them back in. see if you notice a difference. Be sure to journal or log about it !
