Things That Make Me Wonder And Go Hmmm

Have you ever thought about something you saw or read and said to yourself “Hmm”? I find myself doing that a lot lately. Here are some examples that come to mind:
Yogurt: Many believe it is one of the best things that you can eat. It is, if you eat the right kind: natural, plain, organic, no fruit added, unless you add your own fresh, organic fruit for flavor). Grocery stores sell too many kinds with many unnecessary ingredients and often full of artificial sweeteners, which can be harmful. A general rule to follow with yogurt is this: the longer the ingredient list, the less value is in it. “Hmmm.” Did I hear you say that?
Baby food: Have you heard that brands you’ve known all your life were tested and found to contain pesticides?
Alcohol: Have you tried the diet that allows you to have beer or wine as long as you count the points? What nutritional value is there in alcohol? Don’t get me wrong, I like the odd liquid barley sandwich, but I count it as good old stress relief, not points to subtract or keep me from eating something nutritious that my body may be starving for. All carbohydrates and all calories are not created equal and should not be treated equally by any plan. We have an epidemic of obesity on our hands, which, sadly includes many children. Old beliefs must change for the health of people to change.
Toothpaste: How safe is it? It has a warning on it, this one taken from a popular children’s brand. “Warning: Keep out of reach of children under 6 years of age. If they accidentally swallow more than used for brushing, seek professional assistance or contact a poison control center immediately”. Do you know what the brushing allowable amount is? The size of a pea! Anymore than that you child could be at risk of poisoning. “Hmmm .” Makes me think natural brands would be safer to use. Why risk it? I’ve seen kids over my years just squirt it out like candy, and it’s no wonder. Most brands taste like candy.
Water: Oh boy! I’m not sure if I want to go there. J What kind of water are you drinking? Are you sure that it is safe? To be brief, city water is recycled, treated with chlorine and other chemicals. Chlorine is highly suggested as one of the causes of cancer. It is best to avoid it whenever possible.
To those reading this with asthma, have you noticed that your breathing is worse or better after a shower? Does the steam help or does the smell of chlorine worsen your condition?
Do you drink spring water? How do you know it is safe? Spring water contains natural minerals! Are you getting enough of what you need and can your body assimilate them? Could you be getting too much of a mineral that may cause an imbalance within your body? I drink distilled water and yes, the minerals are taken out but I replace them daily with a scientifically-balanced formulation to ensure that I get ALL the minerals that I need. Also, I know my water is pure. Reverse osmosis is good as well, but once again, you must take minerals daily.
Supplements: I could go on and on here about the differences and there are many. I have a comparison guide that shows hundreds of supplements. You would be surprised how many common, well-known brands are inadequate and not even beneficial to your health. I used to think they were all the same and would just grab the one that had the most in the bottle for the cheapest cost. I know now that is not the best way to shop.
Vitamins and minerals work together in a synergistic balance. They should be supplemented daily too. You cannot get all that you need from food anymore. Long ago you could, but because of processing methods, picking vegetables and fruits before they are vine ripened, toxins in the air, water and soils, mineral-depleted soils, etc., the nutritional value is not as potenet. Grow your own fruits and vegetables or buy farm fresh, organically grown produce and still supplement daily with a quality, balanced supplement.
Did you know that you do not need a supplement with iron in it unless you are actually diagnosed as being deficient in iron? Vitamin A can be toxic in large doses. Beta carotene is a safe form that converts to Vitamin A as the body requires.
I once met a person who refused an executive position in a vitamin manufacturing company because they put carcinogenic (cancer causing) coating on their vitamins. They were a company that manufactured for other companies as well as their own brand. When she asked them how they could manufacture a brand with a known carcinogenic coating, they responded by saying that it wasn’t their brand. “Hmmmm.” It is all about business and the almighty dollar.
Prescription Medicines: You have a health problem. The Doctor didn’t ask if you were avoiding toxins, eating your 5-10 fruits and vegetables a day, taking quality scientifically-proven supplements, drinking pure water, getting rest, exercise, consuming good fats, avoiding stress or doing what you can to reduce it. Doctors are over-loaded with patients and have little time to be with them. As well, they have minimal training in the area of nutrition. So you get a prescription for your problem. I’ll never understand this and have said this many times, you are not likely deficient in drugs but more likely deficient in nutrients.
All drugs have side effects so you head back to the Doctor because the side effects are bothersome and you are once again given a prescription for those problems. The symptoms are suppressed and the disorders go deeper into your body. Could the answer be ‘Treat the cause, not just the symptoms.’? “Hmmmm.”
These are some of the things that make me go … “Hmmmm”. How about you?
To your health,
Sheena
